Ratpoison[1] is a simple window manager with no fat library dependencies, no fancy graphics, and no window decorations.
Figure 6.12a provides a screenshot of Ratpoison running on a PC-BSD system:

Ratpoision uses keyboard shortcuts. To view the shortcuts, press Ctrl-t then ?. To leave this help screen, press enter.
To open an xterm, press Ctrl-t then c. Type exit to close the xterm. Type killall ratpoison with an xterm to leave Ratpoison and return to the login screen.
The Ratpoison wiki[2] contains an FAQ and tips for setting keyboard shortcuts.
