i3[1] is a lightweight, tiling window manager. Keyboard shortcuts are provided to open xterms in order to start applications from the command line. Figure 6.8a shows a screenshot of i3 running on PC-BSD® 9.2.

i3 provides a panel that on PC-BSD® will contain icons for Translations:Bluetooth Manager/Page display title/de (if the system has a Bluetooth interface), Translations:Update Manager/Page display title/de, Translations:Network Configuration/Page display title/de (if your wireless card is detected), and Translations:Life Preserver/Page display title/de.

To open an xterm, use Alt+Enter. Windows do not provide minimize/mazimize or close buttons, so type exit when you are finished using an xterm. To leave the window manager and return to the login screen, type killall i3 from within an xterm.

The i3 Users Guide[2] contains the default key bindings and instructions for customizing i3.
