Keeping PC-BSD Updated
This section covers how to keep your PC-BSD system updated, both in minor online updates and major point releases.
Checking for online updates
Applying online-updates to your PC-BSD system is relatively easy. When an online update is available, your tray notifier will change to the yellow notification icon.
Installing online updates
Double-clicking the notifier will launch the "Software & Updates" utility, and your online update will be listed. If you have closed the updater utility, you can always open the Software & Updates utility by going to Start -> System Settings -> Software & Updates
Select the online update(s) you wish to install, and click "Install selected updates".
The patches will now be downloaded and applied to your system. If the patch requires a reboot you will be notified to do so after the patch has been installed.
Updating Major Releases
Starting in PC-BSD 7.1, updating to a new release of PC-BSD has been made easier than ever. First, you will need to download or obtain a copy of the new DVD / CD for the version of PC-BSD you wish to upgrade to. Boot the DVD / CD as you would to do a regular fresh install, and select the "Upgrade / Repair" option at the installation options screen.
The next screen will show the detected installs of PC-BSD. Simply select the version / partition you wish to upgrade, and click next. The update will now take place, preserving the home data, installed PBIs, /usr/local and user accounts. When the installation is finished, simply reboot and you will booted into the new version of your PC-BSD Operating System.
WARNING: As with any major system upgrade it is always wise to backup important files & data beforehand.
